On display in the Archives and Special Collections’ first (far left) case, Donnelley and Lee Library lower level, are books, pamphlets and a graphic work all relating to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) of Illinois, born two hundred years ago on February 12. All materials are from Donnelley and Lee’s Special Collections, mostly donations from the 1970s and 1980s from Brunson MacChesney, son of General Nathan MacChesney (Chicago and Libertyville) who was in charge for Illinois of the Lincoln centennial celebration in 1909, and from the estates of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Getz, some materials originally from the collection of Mrs. Getz’s father, Lincoln collector Maurice Needham. The materials are on view whenever the library is open.
Getz and Needham items show a presentation from the editor of the 1947 Lincoln Reader, the eminent Illinois historian and writer Paul Angle. One R.R. Donnelley Lakeside Press item is a 1920s printing of the Gettysburg Address designed by William Kittredge. A high spot in the exhibit is a poster-scaled, highly-detailed graphic pictorial colored map showing Lincoln’s trail across Illinois, created in1940 and issued by the Northern Trust Company, Chicago.
The Donnelley and Lee Library is located at the east end of the loop drive around Middle Campus, Lake Forest College, entered from the east end of College Road at Sheridan Road, one block south of Deerpath, or at the drive another half block further south. The library can be entered from entries on the north or south, and the lower level is accessed from the main lobby behind the red wall, and down the stairs. The display cases, outside Archives and Special Collections, are along the wall opposite the stairway, on the left. Library parking is nearby, and during the day visitors should post a note under the windshield wiper blade indicating that they are visiting the Library’s Special Collections. For directions to and around the campus see the institution’s website, www.lakeforest.edu.
