Temporary greetings Pipeline ideas ILLINET Online

Going out of town? Use these tips to set temporary voice mail and email messages.

Set voice mail temporary greeting
This feature permits you to record a temporary greeting without changing your regular greetings.

1. Enter your voice mail box
2. Press 82, then select option 3
3. Press 5 to begin recording and # when finished
4. Press 2 to review the greeting
5. Press 9 to set an expiration date and time (use military time). For no expiration date, press all # signs for the month, day and time.
6. If you return before the expiration date and want to delete your temporary greeting, press 82, select option 3 and press 76 to delete.

Set email auto-reply
This automatically sends replies to email you receive. It's a good way to let people know you are out of town and will get back to them later. Auto-reply will not send messages to email lists.

  1. Go to the hermes e-mail server:
        PC :
            Go to Start / Run
Type "telnet hermes.lfc.edu" (no quotation marks).
        Mac:
            Start your telnet application
            Open a connection to hermes.lfc.edu
  2. Login using the username and password you use for checking email.
  3. Type "onvacation" (no quotation marks).
  4. Type your vacation message. Do not hit enter until you are
done. If the text is longer than one line, it will wrap. It may appear to break in the middle of a word, but it will format correctly when sent.
  5. After you hit enter, your account will be set to "vacation" mode. To start over, type "onvacation."
  6. Type "exit" (no quotation marks) to log out.
  7. To turn off your email auto-reply, login to your account (steps 1 and 2). Type "offvacation" (no quotation marks). Type "exit" to logout.
These steps start and stop the vacation message immediately. To arrange in advance for the message to start and stop on specified dates, or to ask any questions, call Marylin Bell at 735-5114.

Innovative ideas for using Pipeline

  • Use the bulletin board to give your students reminders about homework deadlines, exam dates, study sessions, and special office hours. This will keep them checking the class bulletin board frequently and allows you to use valuable class time for other material.
