Take the Metra to the Canal St. station. Exit the station onto Madison Ave., and turn left or east. Walk about 11 blocks or 1 mile to Michigan Ave. Turn right or south, and walk about 6 blocks to the Art Institute.

  • Most materials must be requested for viewing using a "call slip."
  • Use the Ryerson Online Catalog to determine which items you want to request and to get their call numbers.

When you arrive at the Newberry, you will need to put any outer
garments, umbrellas, newspapers, food, briefcases, backpacks, large
handbags, and other personal belongings in a locker on the 1st floor.
(You need a quarter to rent a locker, but your quarter is refunded when
you leave.) You can bring in some notes, pens/pencils, digital camera,
and a laptop. (See their digital camera policy.) You might also
want to bring a sweater-- sometimes the reading rooms are a bit chilly.
You will need to go to the 3rd floor to get your library card-- bring a
valid photo ID with a current address (driver's license is perfect) in
order to get a 1-year card.

Readers must be at least 16 years old or a junior in high
school.

  1. From the Lake Forest College Campus, head West on Deerpath for 1 mile to Greenbay Road (first stop light past town).
  2. Turning right onto Greenbay, head North for 4 miles (cross 176 at 3 miles).
  3. Passing the front of the campus, turn into the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science at the second set of purple signs to the North entrance.

A list of journals available at the Rosalind Franklin University (formerly Finch) is kept at Lake Forest's Donnelley & Lee Library Reference desk.
You may also search their Serials Holdings online before you go to the school.
Some journals may only be available online, and therefore only available to Rosalind Franklin students.

At the Rosalind Franklin Library:
Be sure to do all online research before going to the Rosalind Franklin Library.  The computers there are password protected.

Enter via the North entrance. The security guard will buzz you in after which you will need to sign-in using Lake Forest College as your "designation."

Purchase a Smart Card from the machine to your right ($2 for the card + 8 copies; 17 copies per dollar thereafter). The machine is opposite the circulation desk.

Go up the stairs to the left of the security guard, then straight ahead to the library.

Journals are straight ahead, to your left.
